Gas Generation Initiatives

Converted to Gas

As a first step, we are currently constructing a gas pipeline to bring a gas supply to Kilroot Power Station, following receipt of planning permission from Mid and East Antrim Borough Council.

Flexible Gas Generation

The next step is the replacement of the existing coal fired units at Kilroot with new cleaner and more flexible gas generation. This will ensure the transition towards lower carbon generation as well as protecting security and stability of supply for Northern Ireland through the continuation of indigenous generation. This technology will be delivered via competitive capacity auctions and will be fuelled initially by natural gas. It is envisaged that it will also be capable of using gas alternatives, such as biogas and hydrogen, as they become available to the market.

Flexible Technology

Highly flexible technology is designed to work in harmony with wind and other renewable generation currently on the electricity grid.

We are also currently carrying out a Pre-Application Community Consultation process on a proposal to connect Heat Recovery Steam Generators to the new Open Cycle Gas Turbines. This will improve the efficiency of electricity generation on the site. For more information, please email KilrootHRSGs@gravisplanning.com.
