Hydrogen has the potential to play a pivotal role in the future because it can be used to store and transport energy from wind, solar and other renewable sources to power homes, businesses, vehicles and more.
A proposed hydrogen facility presents the option of producing renewable hydrogen gas from water through the process of electrolysis. It would therefore future proof Kilroot Energy Park for such times as when technological advances allow the transition from gas to hydrogen.
The hydrogen produced by the electrolysers could be compressed and used on site or transported for use by other consumers. There are various uses for hydrogen including electricity generation, use as a fuel for hydrogen vehicles, injected into the gas grid or for various other industrial applications.
